4 Essential Winter Clothing Items

By Shopaholic James / Last modified on December 23, 2022

If you live in a cold part of the world, there are some clothing items that are just essential. From a good jacket to a dashing scarf, make sure you have these items ready for when the cold weather hits!

Winter Jackets

A winter jacket is a must regardless of where you live. If the temperatures only drop slightly, you may be able to get away with a lightweight jacket such as a packable jacket or an ultra light down jacket. If, however, you live somewhere colder then you will probably need something with more insulation.

For the minimalists that don’t want a wardrobe full of jackets for all the different seasons, a good option to consider is a triclimate or 3-in-1 jacket such as those from North Face.

Boots

If the area you’re in gets pretty cold, a pair of winter boots might be an essential purchase. Again, it depends where you live: in some places you might be able to survive with just a pair of sneakers or casual shoes that aren’t too thin. However, if you’re in a particularly cold part of the world then you might need to think about boots and even fur-lined boots.

You don’t have to focus on hiking boots, although these are definitely more acceptable in the winter. Stylist has an excellent list of the different types of women’s winter boots while NYMag and Tree Line Review cover some good options for the men.

Leggings

Just because it’s winter that doesn’t mean that you have to give up your casual comforts. It might be too cold for yoga pants but you can opt for thermal winter leggings instead. These leggings are often so well insulated that they can be used for hiking, whether as a base layer or just on their own. Some leggings come with pockets, ideal for holding tissues or hiking maps, so they’re designed to be practical as well as comfortable.

And don’t worry: there are winter leggings for men as well!

Hats, Scarves, & Gloves

It’s easy to get wrapped up (pun intended!) in articles that compare the best shoes or jackets, but, thankfully, most people don’t need to get bogged down in the details of the different hats and scarfs. Choose something that’s appropriately thick, feels nice, and looks nice! But if you want to get analyse the warmest hats or scarves, there are plenty of articles that have done the research.
